Is there any difference between contemporary and modern architecture? This is a question commonly asked by many. The main reason for this is because most of us can’t clearly differentiate the two. Most of the people interchangeably use the two wording brings about more confusion. A proper differentiation of the two is the only solution to this.

Modern design

When the term modern design is used, it is a defined style that was created during 1920-1950.This is a defined style that is usually associated with this period. The style is constant and does not change. This design emphasizes the sparing use of interior design, use of clean lines and an asymmetrical building design. A modern home is characterized by white walls with an occasional pop of bright colour. Most of the floors are bare.

Contemporary Design

The contemporary design means plans that are being created and produced as of the present time. This style is dynamic and is constantly changing. It is not tied to a specific style but keeps on changing with time. This design has a tendency of borrowing small pieces of designs from other eras. Currently, contemporary homes are embracing large windows, odd shades and an open plan that is in harmony with the surrounding landscape.

The distinction between the two might not be clearly understood by looking at the definition, but when you compare some of their features, you will clearly understand their differences. The following includes some of these

  • Architecture

Modern architecture improves on the traditional article. It incorporates glass windows where traditionally walls were present. It has embraced the use of white stucco or whitewash and has an intentional asymmetry. Architecture has adopted the use of flat roof that are at a distinct right angle. Contemporary architecture has embraced the use of solid walls that are covered in a random manner (opposed to white stucco). Contemporary homes similarly have a flat roof that brings about a boxy feel.

  • Interior

Modern spaces have embraced simplicity in adornment. This is as opposed to traditional space that tends to be full. Modern interiors are also characterized by clean and a hint or two of colours. Contemporary interiors are characterized by inclusion of open floor plan. There is a tendency of room merging e.g. kitchen merging with dining and the dining merging with the living.

  • Furniture

Furniture in a modern design tends to be raised off the floor, and this improves the air circulation within the house. Furniture lines are clean and simple. Contemporary design is characterized by the desire of showcasing personal taste and individuality. There is use of a glass table top among other individual tastes.

  • Style

Modern methods are characterized by a minimalist approach. This has resulted in a cluster free space. Attention is placed on the details; this refers to artistic, architectural or furniture related elements. Contemporary design has embraced the use of primary forms that are beautiful yet simple.

  • Natural material

Modern style has a tendency of incorporating lots of natural materials. These include Leather, wood, stone, teak among others. These materials tend to provide warmth and texture to the house. Contemporary design has embraced a balanced use of the natural material. Natural finishes are occasionally mixed with concrete or steel.

  • Walls

In modern space, white, crispy and fresh walls have been used. They help in enhancing the details of the room without having to draw attention. In the contemporary design, large windows have been used, they tend to provide plenty of sunlight into the house.
